Adelaide's breathing space

The world’s only city entirely encircled with parks, Adelaide's Park Lands are the City's defining feature and greatest asset. Over 760ha, the encircling ring of Park Lands creates a wonderful sense of entrance to the City itself and still retain the integrity of the original 1836 design by surveyor Colonel William Light.  Recognised now on the National Heritage List, the Park Lands, together with the six city Squares, and the River Torrens, provide a wealth of opportunities to enjoy social, cultural, environmental and recreational activities.

The Park Lands contain something for everyone – an extensive network of walking trails, as well as the Park Lands Trail which encircles the City, picnic areas and playgrounds to enjoy with friends and family, a wide range of sporting facilities, a variety of exciting events, cultural sites ranging from statues to formal gardens, as well as many quiet spots to watch the world go by. All of this is contained within a wonderful expanse of Park Lands which are an icon of the City of Adelaide.
