Park Lands governance

The Adelaide Park Lands Authority is the principle advisory body to the City of Adelaide and the South Australian State Government on Park Lands matters as part of the Park Lands governance framework; see diagram here. The Authority provides guidance around the use of and improvement to the Adelaide Park Lands through the development of the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy 2015 – 2025, which can be found here

The Adelaide Park Lands Authority was established in early 2007 by the Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005, and is responsible for the following functions:

  • Preparation and maintenance of the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy
  • Undertake a key policy role (in an advisory capacity) in respect to the management and protection of the Adelaide Park Lands
  • Comment on management and heritage plans, leases, licences and other grants of occupation
  • Promote public awareness of the Adelaide Park Lands
  • Ensure that the interests of all South Australians are taken into account in relation to Park Lands matters
  • Undertake or support other activities that will protect or enhance the Adelaide Park Lands

Adelaide Park Lands Authority membership

The Adelaide Park Lands Authority has ten members, with half being appointed by the South Australian State Government and the other half appointed by the City of Adelaide. The Lord Mayor of Adelaide is generally the Presiding Member, unless he or she declines that position, in which case the City of Adelaide appoints someone of its choosing. Remaining members are required to have a range of knowledge, skills and experience across the following areas:

  • Biodiversity or environmental planning or management
  • Recreation or open space planning or management
  • Cultural heritage conservation or management
  • Landscape design or park management
  • Tourism or event management
  • Indigenous culture or reconciliation
  • Financial management
  • Local government

Adelaide Park Lands Authority meetings

The Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association

Sometimes the Adelaide Park Lands Authority (the Authority) is confused with the Adelaide Park Lands Preservation Association (APPA). APPA is a community group dedicated to the preservation of the Adelaide Park Lands and its website can be found here.
